One thing about language that always confuses me is when someone

ask me a question. I noticed some cultures are very direct. Direct questions can actually be kind of impolite depending on how it is asked.

Did you know in English there are three types of questions in: direct, indirect, and question tags. Direct and indirect questions are used to ask for information you do not know, while question tags are generally used to clarify or confirm the information you think you know.

Examples of direct questions that can sound impolite :
🗣when does the bus leave !
🗣 how old are you ?

Now, to make these questions a little more polite add “excuse me” or “ I beg your pardon “
🗣 excuse me, when does the bus leave?
🗣 I beg your pardon, can I ask how old you are ?

See the difference ?

I’ll share more later 🤗

indeed! My previous boss think me and the other Romania boy are the most stubborn ones in the team. Guess most of it come from the language itself. It do take a lot efforts to make “no” sounds nicely

Hi Lucky. I beg your pardon, but don't you need to add "s" to the verb "ask" after someone?

@... With verbs, only those with a third-person singular noun or pronoun (he, she, boat, courage) as a subject add an s to the end. Verbs with plural nouns and pronouns do not add s at the end. (The singular pronouns I and you likewise do not add an s to the verb.)

@... I’m a little confused about what your trying to ask. “I beg yoiur pardon, can I ask how old you are ?” Is the sentences your referring to when adding an S at the end right ?
