I dated a Japanese guy at one point when living in Japan. He

would always introduce me as his “American girlfriend.” Like he had to make it clear that I was a foreigner to everyone. It’s felt like a weird…status thing. I don’t know how to explain it, but it wasn’t a great feeling, so I broke up with him. He wasn’t a gaijin hunter per se, but he just seemed idk how to explain it. 🤔

He was very kind and sweet, but I wanted to just be someone’s girlfriend and not have to have my nationality as my main feature.

Anyway. If you’re dating a foreigner…cultural differences are fun. But I think they should be a person before they are a nationality. Just my opinion.

    The way you share your opinion is genuinely impressive....like if you Directly said the last sentence, only few can connect it or make it remember for future but I think through this way of dictating your opinion it will last long in my brain...✌️

    @ You think so? I didn’t feel that way while living there. Everyone was very friendly and kind. I only had problems with students and the occasional drunk person.

    @ Americanos were named in Italy because American soldiers couldn’t handle strong espresso shots without diluting them. That may have been the reason. Although, most people don’t believe my mom is white because I don’t have those features. So for me personally, it would seem weird for him to feel that way. But I have heard that before. It’s just strange to me.

    May I ask, if you've ever shared your feeling with this person?? Or you were not comfortable with it?? I think Japanese society holds a certain imperialism (some extent white supremacy). They internalized this oppression as they are inferior to American or western. That's why in order to offset this reality, he behaved that way to feel better. Especially after WWII, Japan has been under great influence by American culture, politics, economy, everything. The problem is internalized oppression is not always conscious, rather subconscious. That's why I wondered if you had given him a different insight. Anyway, I agree with you!! Totally.

    @ᴀᴢᴜᴍɪ...ₐzᵤₘᵢᵢₛₘ.cₒₘ Yeah. We definitely talked about it. But we couldn’t understand each other’s feelings. And I’ve definitely heard about the inferiority complex. When I tried to explain it to him or talk to him about it, he would tell me it was annoying to talk about. So we never came to an understanding. Thank you for your insight:)
