There are 4 big Gates in Seoul and those are rooted from Joseon Dynasty. Joseon was the Confucian country so the names of Gates were influenced by it. The Confucianism emphasis on 인의예지신 which are Gentle(인), Justify(의), Manner(예), Wisdom(지) and Faith(신). So in the name of the Gates have those words respectively like 흥인지문, 돈의문, 숭례문, 숙정문 and the Gates are currently called based on the position like East(동) and West(서), South(남) and North(북) Gate for convenience. The original name of the 숙정문(북대문) was the 홍지문 that has the word 지(wisdom) but the King doesn’t want to his people become wisdom so renamed it as 숙정문. At the center of the 4 Gates, there is a bell and the name of it is 보신각종
