Idiom of the Day:
“Pulling my leg”

If you ask someone if they

are “pulling your leg,” you are asking them if they are joking with you or pranking you. You find that whatever it is that they are telling you seems improbable, and therefore must be a joke. This can be said in a funny way like if someone tells you they won the lottery, or in a serious way like someone telling you that your car is missing.

“Honey, can I buy this purse for $399?”

“Are you pulling my leg? This is very expensive! Besides, did your other eight purses get holes in them?”

@abier Well, my wife can buy whatever she wants. But for expensive items, it is common courtesy for her to check in with me to make sure we can safely afford it. Had my wife made such a purchase a week ago, we would have over-drafted our bank account from all of our Christmas shopping and flights to see family for Christmas vacation. For most Americans, a $400 purse is also rather expensive. This is an item that should be saved up for and not purchased on a whim. I only earn $4000 per month, so spending 10% of my monthly income on a purse seems like a costly, unnecessary purchase.

@Scott Cecil Allen I didn't mean you at all, the example in general gives a bad stereotype of a woman.

@abier Well, I wasn’t intending this to be a stereotype. My wife will joke with me like this all of the time. I know she is only joking. But she still likes fancy things. I will even joke back with her and blow on the purse and pretend to shine it and put it back. 😂
