Here’s a tip: “gotta” actually means “have to” / “has to”.

“Got to” isn’t grammatically correct. “Got to” is an idiom for “have to”.

So I have to go = I gotta go.
You have to be careful = you gotta be careful
He has to go home now. = he’s gotta go home now

Hi man. The correct form would be I've gotta and you've gotta... but you commonly use I gotta and you gotta, right?

@Allysa To clarify my post, technically it means “have got to” or “has got to”, but it’s an idiom for “have to” and “has to”. When using he/she/it, you include the contraction he has, she has, it has, which is “he’s”, “she’s”, “it’s”. He has got to go. He’s got to go. He’s gotta go.

So ”gotta” is more correct than ”got to”? I thought they were both incorrectly and used only in the spoken language

@Rosher the phrase is actually “have go to”. So when you’re being “correct”, you’re saying I have got to go. I’ve gotta go. However, it’s common to just say I gotta go. None of them are grammatically correct. The correct phrase is “I have to go.”

@Zx It’s all informal language. Texting is the same as spoken language. That’s why you see people writing gotta. When you’re writing an essay, you wouldn’t say gotta. You would say have to.
