I think your best option would be to take the Yakumo Express train from Okayama city to Izumo. It's about a 3.5 hour ride. Alternatively, you could fly there or take a night bus.

@Harry Should be fairly easy. I used to live in Izumo. It's a nice little city. If you have the chance, I'd recommend visiting Matsue as well. Once you're in the San In area, trains/travel times become inconvenient. Just a fact of being in inaka, or the boonies.

You can go to Kyoto from Osaka by train ( named Keihan ). I live in Osaka and my school is in kyoto, so I take a train every morning!!👍
