Life Advice: America’s Cost of Living

I know many foreigners

dream of coming to America, but most are not aware of how expensive it is to live here. “The American Dream” still exists, but it is fading day by day.

As a teacher (20 years of experience + Master’s Degree) I get paid $3700 per month (after taxes). With this, I must pay the following prices per month:

Mortgage - $1950 for a 500 sq.meter home
Electricity - $175 (winter is expensive)
Water - $80 Internet - $60
Food - $350 Car - $350
Phone - $155

And so on... We earn American dollars. But we also spend them. Your country may be better off...

If we were all convinced of the things that we possess no matter in what quantity, we can recognize that neither place nor the salary can make us happy except we ourselves.

@Jack my wife works too, so we are ok. But without her working, we have a saying in America... “We would live paycheck to paycheck.”

Poignant phrase " the américain dream is faiding day by day " but at least in America the unemployment rate is low, unlike in the rest of some contries.

Most of people pay 2000 RMB mortgage for around 100 sq. meter apartment in China. Their average salary is around 5000RMB.

@Scott Cecil Allen Yes, the population is extremely dense. Most of the people live in apartments of high buildings. Only rich bosses and movie stars live in villas. Some villas are not enough big than 500 sq. meters. The education fee is very high for most families. My colleagues kid in kindergarten, it need 1500RMB per month.

@emma in a very high majority of cases, yes. Most people cannot afford to have a parent stay home while the other works. It’s practically impossible in many situations.

@Judy education is another sore subject for me. To get a bachelor’s degree in most American universities, it will cost $120,000 ($30K per year). Child care costs $15,000 per year for infants, and $9000 per year for a four-year-old, with varying costs in between based on the child’s age.

@Scott Cecil Allen Good topic! Btw, what is the American dream nowadays? I remembered that someone said the typical American dream is to own a big house, 2 or 3 kids, 2 or 3cars, and a dog, you can go to the park or go to the beach on weekends, etc. is it still the same right now for the common people ?
