Idiom of the Day

“In a pinch”

When someone is in some minor

trouble or difficulty, they are “in a pinch.” But this idiom usually is followed by advice of what to do when you are “in a pinch.” For example, if you are baking and run out of walnuts, you can use pecans in a pinch. If you are in a pinch for time on the way to work, skip breakfast and avoid construction and school zones while driving. You can ask a coworker to assist you in a pinch on an important deadline.

@julie somewhat like that, yes. You don’t want to use the substitute. It would be better if you didn’t. But if you have to, it is acceptable so that the entire effort is not wasted.

Does it also mean 'only if necessary as a substitute'?

You can borrow my pen in a pinch. I know you have a quiz after a couple of minutes. Is it correct?
