me recently. The problem is after the first few messages, their replies become shorter. I lead the conversation, ask all the questions, and try to discuss interesting topics.

If you're serious about learning English, try to actually contribute to the conversation. Not just wait for me to keep it going.

If you won't put the effort into learning, why should I use my time trying to help?
