"reading the air." It is highly important in Japanese culture to easily pick up on social cues. Those who are unable to do so are labeled 「ＫＹ」or 「Kuuki Yomenai」, literally "Cannot read the air."

    @Satoshi I am quite familiar! It might be common in Asia! Japanese air might make you feel you have to act formal at all times if you are new to it. I appreciate the use of tatemae.
