How To Stop Being Shy When Speaking English..
Are you normally
a sociable person? Are you normally a shy person?
When you speak English, how can you be more confident in conversations?
TIP #1: Relax, take a deep breath!
This may seem like such a simple task, but it can help a lot! Before you have an English conversation or before you study English:
Take a DEEP breath in.
Take a DEEP breath out.
And repeat at least 5 times.
This one minute exercise will physically bring oxygen to your brain and body which will help you relax, calm down, and think clearer.
TIP #2: Talk with someone you trust!
If you only speak English at work, or only when a tourist asks you a question on the street, you probably feel nervous.
But when you speak with a trusted friend, teacher, or speaking partner, you can feel safe and less shy.
I recommend talking one-on-one with someone you trust.
Then you can talk with a group, and then finally, you can talk in more difficult situations, like at work.
TIP #3: Ask questions!
When you ask questions, you are in control of the conversation.
You aren’t helplessly waiting for the other person to ask you something. Being in control will help you to gain confidence and feel strong!
I recommend asking “WH” questions (who, what, where, when, why and how) because the other person is more likely to give a detailed answer.
When the other person answers you, keep asking more based on what they said!
If you ask only “yes” or “no” questions (like “Did you have a good weekend?”), it will be harder to keep the conversation going.
These tips have really helped my students and I hope they can also help you!
Good luck!
