7. suck 差劲 ; 糟透了
A: Guess what? We’ve just now missed the bus, and the next one won’t come for another 45 minutes. 知道吗? 我们刚好错过公车了; 下一班(车)还要四十五分钟才会来。
B: That sucks. 真逊!
“suck” 是「差劲」的意思。 “That movie sucks.” 是「那部电影真是糟透了」的意思。
8. catch some Zs 小睡一下
A: Excuse me. I have to catch some Zs. 抱歉! 我想小睡一下。
B: I thought you just woke up. Sleepy head. 我以为你才刚睡醒。爱睡虫。
漫画里的人睡觉, 不是都画”Z,Z,Z…”来表示吗? 这里的 “catch some Zs” 就是这样来的。
9. take a dump 上大号
A: Would you mind closing the door? I’m trying to take a dump here. 你可不可以把门关起来呢? 我正在上大号。
B: Well, learn to lock the door next time. 那么下次学会把门锁起来吧!
“dump” 是「丢掉」的意思, 「丢」什么不必我解释了吧?
10. crank up 把声量调大
A: Hey! The volume is too low. Why don’t you crank it up some? 嘿! 这声量太小了。你把它调大一点好吗?
B: No problem. 没问题。
这里的「声量调大」也可以说 “turn it up”。意思是一样的。
