Cleanliness and hygiene are well known and established traits about Japan.
There are accounts written by some of the first Europeans that visited the country about the higher standards of cleanliness and hygiene that they encountered as far as back as the 17th century.
In regards to personal hygiene, I like a good soak in the tub once in a while but I’m not obsessed with it. In fact, I usually prefer a shower, especially in the summer after a workout.
You may think I’m prudish but I tend to be uncomfortable about soaking naked in a public bath with strangers. I’m always a bit uncertain whether to engage in small talk or to keep quiet.
From my experience, it seems that for the Japanese, communal bathing is nothing special and they don’t seem to be too shy about it. Are you comfortable bathing with strangers? Do you engage in small talk?
