American Phrase Post
In America, you may hear people say the
phrase “I plead the fifth”. Here’s why: The Constitution is the foundational document for the United States. The constitution can be amended in order to make change or include more protections. The first 10 amendments are known as the Bill of Rights, and they protect personal liberties such as the freedom of religion and right to free speech. The fifth amendment includes a lot of rights related to the court system, and one of them is the right to not testify against yourself. Essentially, this means that you have the right to remain silent if you wish. So, in a casual setting, if someone doesn’t want to say something that may get them into trouble, they may say “I plead the fifth”
Example:
“Did you tell her that I am bad at cooking?”
“I plead the fifth”
