“Big fish in a small pond”
Someone who is
popular or well known in a small group, but not recognized anywhere else is a “big fish in a small pond.” Maybe this person is quite important at their job, but otherwise unknown anywhere else... Or maybe they were popular in high school but now that they have aged, they have lost their popularity. Or perhaps they were gifted and skilled where they came from, but are rather ordinary when in a new environment. This idiom would come off as humbling and possibly insulting if stated to the person directly - even if it is true...Download the HelloTalk app to join the conversation.
