Study the difference between 本来and原来

本来 indicates "things are

supposed to be so" , often used with a modal verb.
本来 + 应该 （要）（得）（会）
生活本来就是很现实的。Life is supposed to be very realistic.

A：你学 真努力。B：我是学生，本来就 应该努力学习。A: You study so hard. B: I'm a student, I'm supposed to study hard.

本来 + 就, is often used to refer to an old situation compared with the previous situation.
It is often followed by "（而且）又……，（就）更……了" to indicate progression.
他本来就不想出去，而且又下雨了，就更不想出去了。
He didn't originally want to go out, plus, now that it's raining, he doesn't want to go out even more.

他本来就没钱，又不想去工作，就更穷了。
He originally didn't have money, and yet, he doesn't want to work , so now he's even poorer.

2.1. 原来

It indicates a sudden realization or understanding of something unknown before.
A：你好啊，好久不见了。 B：原来是你啊，我刚才没认出来。
A: Hi, long time no see. B: Oh, it's you, I didn't recognize you just now.
你汉语说得真好啊，我以为你是中国人，原来你是韩国人。
Your Chinese is really good, I thought you're Chinese, but you're Korean. （原来=so actually, as it turns out [you are Korean])

2.2 It can be used as an adjective and means "former, previous"

It means "former/previous" when it is used as an adjective.
她是我原来的女朋友。
She is my former girlfriend.
他还住在原来的地方。
He still lives in previous place.

3. When 本来 is used, the later change needs to be considered
本来 and 原来 can be used as adverbs to indicate the former situation.
However, when 本来 is used, the later change needs to be considered. But there is no such requirement when 原来 is used.

4. When 原来 is used, the later change doesn't need to be considered
These sentences are followed by现在, 后来, 可是 or 但是 to indicate the transition.
你的手机真好，我原来（本来）也有一个。
Your phone is really good, I had one before.

你的手机真好，我原来（本来）也有一个，可是后来丢了。
Your phone is really good, I had one before, but I lost it.
