Japan is certainly a very safe country. Perhaps part of the reason is because a small police station (aka koban) is a fixture in every town.
My only experience at a koban was a couple of years ago. My cell phone battery was drained and I needed to call an acquaintance to come pick me up. I couldn’t find a pay phone so I asked the officer at the police station if there was one nearby. He responded by letting me use the phone at the station and offered me a cup of water while I waited for my ride. The officer, eager to practice English, peppered me with phrases he had recently learned. I was happy to oblige him in English conversation for until my ride arrived.
It’s reassuring to know that the men in blue are there to assist if I ever have a problem. And of course, I would be more than willing to practice English with them in return.
