To me this has to be one of the most foreign concepts to

someone non-chinese. The idea is before a long holiday such as Chinese New Years, we work the Sunday before and the Saturday after. So what appears to be a seven day holiday in reality is only 5. This happens throughout the year across various holidays.

@Vin Franklin Foreign as in strange and unfamiliar ... I'm pretty sure you just agreed with Meng whilst disagreeing, (which is a talent all by itself 😬) ... it's Chinese employment practice that would definitely get the unions where I'm from camping outside the premises of employers that tried something so shifty/shitty on its workforce. Surely true of US unions, right? 🤔

In China, you have make-up days for scheduled holidays. (For schools) If the holiday is during the weekday, we would have off during that day, and make it up on Saturday

In China, many people are working far away from their family (not hundreds but thousands of miles away) and it's not unusual to spend days travelling home by train. They may only be able to travel home once a year. So this approach of taking days from the weekend offers workers a chance to have a longer holiday (of consecutive days). As harsh as it may seem, it allows them to enjoy more time at home with their families during the holiday period.

@shades right, but as others have eluded to the point you're also trying to keep a certain quota of working days. Otherwise you could have weekends + 7days yea?

@Meng甍 I was kinda replying to those who wondered why there was such a system. It's not unusual for there to be a number of expected working days or school days in other countries. It's not a free-for-all in relation to allocated holidays. Maybe a few days at Christmas or New Year. If you want longer, you can use your annual holiday allowance.

@ and for those who are working the 7 day holiday, they will be receiving triple pay the first 3 days, and double pay the following 4 for a total of 17 days pay for 7 days work.
