I am feeling so sad and stressed today. A family member back

home in the US is sick and will likely die soon. My family is pressuring me to go home and visit but I don’t think they understand how hard it is to travel right now. Plus the time difference, jet lag, cost of flight is over $1000, covid tests I must get to travel though I am vaccinated, cancelling my classes and summer vacation plans. I’m not sure what to do. 😩

    Sounds Iike a hard decision to make. Is the person a close family member? Flight tickets are more like $2000-3000 now. When I was in the US I couldn’t come back to Japan for my grandma’s funeral because of the visa issue.

    @TM They are a close family member but they are very old and when I moved to Japan last year and visited them I was kind of thinking it was the last time I would see them. I told my family I probably would not visit for three years but now they are pressuring me and making me feel guilty. I’m sorry you missed your grandmothers funeral. It is sad when you cannot attend abs get the same closure.

    If you think it’s important to you, I guess you should. But you don’t have to feel guilty about staying in Japan even under the circumstances. I don’t think it’s selfish. Family should be able to support whatever the decision you make.
