“Thrown to the wolves”

This idiom has a rather

grim meaning. If you are ever “thrown to the wolves,” it means that you are all on your own to fend for yourself. Often, someone has abandoned you to deal with a difficult situation. In some cases, this also means you have been sacrificed so that someone else can be spared. This has many similar equivalents from “thrown to the lions,” “lighten the sleigh,” and a modern equivalent, “thrown under the bus.”
