To be honest, I wish there were more solidarity among Asian Americans
. At the very least, I wish there were a strong “Asian identity” among Asians who grew up in the West.Racism against Asians in the West is more or less deemed acceptable. There are a lot of reasons for that, but I think one reason is that there isn’t much of a strong and unified Asian identity in America to challenge the status quo.
With this fear of corona virus spreading along with a wave of xenophobia, some Asian Americans are likely to say “I’m not Chinese” in the hopes that they’ll be “spared from racism”. And honestly, that’s weak. That’s like saying “I’m fine with your racism if it doesn’t affect me” or even “I’m not one of THOSE Asians”. That essentially reveals a lack of solidarity among Asian Americans which honestly holds us back.
