Taken from this 400 year old Christmas carol, it simply means to put up Christmas decorations in the house.

The word “deck” is a verb that literally means to decorate. The “halls” in this case just specifies the interior of a house.

The decorations would include wreaths and garlands, made of evergreens, red holly berries, pine cones and even fruits. Modern decorations are lit with LEDs, giving a warm, colourful glow within the house.

Historically, these items were used as a way to brighten up a room with colour, when it was noticeably darker and colder during the winter.
