A really disrespectful question you can ask an Australian/Canadian

/American person is

"Where are you really from?"

or

"where are originally from?"

A lot of people who have parents or grandparents from other counties dont like this question because its kind of like you are saying they aren't a real Australian or a real American.

A lot of people when they here this question it makes them remember times they experienced racism.

If you want to know where there parents or grandparents are from originally you can say "what is your background?"

    I think I heard this from a video. There was an Asian American in it and she said it is really annoying to hear "Where are you really from?" She explained how it goes. A: Where are you from? B: I'm from America. A:No, I mean.. Where are you really from? B: I'm from (a state). A:No, I mean.. Where are you originally from? You don't look like an American. Blah blah. It sounded pretty offensive. So I don't ask those questions. But I saw some people mentioning their heritage? Hmm. Btw is it okay to ask "What is your background"? If it sounds offensive I will not ask. I'm just curious. And thank you for teaching! I appreciate that.

    @한국인 honestly here u dont really hear it as much. It mostly comes from people who come from other countries that dont know its not a good question to ask. But sometimes i cant blame them because in a lot of countries for example in korea mostly everyone has been there for generations ethnically. So for them how you look is connected with your nationality. So a lot of them are not used to living in multicultural places. A lot of japanese and chinese friends think being Australia means being white and if you are not subconsciously they wont really see u as Australian
