Did you know that New Zealand has badlands? Today we found a
geological wonder called the Clay Cliffs. These are ‘bad land’ sharp pinnacles and ridges separated by steep and narrow ravines. The Cliffs were created out of layers of silt and gravel deposited by ancient lakes and rivers around 20 million years ago. They have since been uplifted and tilted by a nearby active fault, and eroded.
The sediment layers are all tilted at the same angle, but the irregular terrain affects how they look. It was an amazing place to visit and I would love to go back.
