Dearest Mother Of Mine
Words could never do you justice, here
I am willing to give it a try, You brought me into this world, in return I entered with a cry.
But it was not to evoke sadness, suffering or pain,
It was with happiness and joy for what I would gain.
As from that day forward I would be the luckiest boy around,
A mother beyond all comparison I had found.
Sure, from time to time you may have embarrassed me,
Such as telling my friends the size of something I needed in PE.
I love to tell people the stories of who you are,
Such as that time when you were in the car.
It was raining lightly, I was playing in the park,
In front of all my friends “Ryan, get in!’, you would bark.
But jokes aside, think of all that you have done,
Waking up at ungodly hours to collect your son.
I hope that as I have grown I’ve made you proud,
To the point where you can stand and shout aloud:
“Look, that’s Ryan...that’s my son!
No, not him...the other one!”
Now every time I come home from the Far East,
I know that you will prepare one hell of a feast.
The sacrifices that you have made for us day after day,
Makes each member of the Herlihy family want to say.
“Barbara Herlihy, a wife, sister, daughter and mother.
You truly are like no other.”
I cherish you more than words can show,
But I think this poem gave it a good go.
So, thank you Mum for being you.
You know how this ends...
I love you.
