BRITISH CULTURE - POLITE REQUESTS

The polite way to make a request is to do it in such a way that the potential helper will not feel pressured to give assistance.

When a person has no duty to help another person, it is impolite either to demand help or to put the request in such a way as to make the other person feel uncomfortable.

(1) "If you have time, would you please <action wanted>?"

(2) "If you have time, I would appreciate it if you would/could <action wanted>."

Both examples above are polite ways of making a request.

With the first example, there is some degree of pressure
because the request is in the form of a question,
which means that the potential helper
may be expected to give a "yes" or "no" answer.

The second example is politer than the first one
because it simply informs the other person that the speaker would like help, but does not require the other person to make a commitment; the other person could simply say (without sounding impolite): "Okay, I'll let you know if I can find some time."
Using "could", rather than "would", makes the request sound less direct and therefore politer.

Both "could" and "would" are used here because we are talking about a possibility.

"Could" is different from "would" in that it means "ability* to do something, either in the sense of a learned skill, etc. or in the sense of circumstances allowing one to do something.

The difference between the use of both words in polite requests is subtle, but maybe because "would" is related to "will" it *feels* more direct than "could".
