Today we are going to continue learning about confusing words
. Here is an explanation of the differences between “farther” and “further.”“Farther” is used when talking about physical distances.
- This is easy to remember because “farther” has the word “far” in it, which is used with distance.
Examples:
- The cat ran even farther away from the dog.
- The boy ran farther than I expected him to.
- You must stay farther than 6 feet away from people because of the Coronavirus.
“Further” is used to talk about figurative concepts such as time and progress. A lot of times, you can use “further” to mean “more.”
Examples:
- If you complain further, I’m going to stop talking to you. (Meaning if you continue to complain, I will stop talking to you.)
- The president hasn’t told us any further information on the Coronavirus. (Meaning the president hasn’t told us any more information.)
- The child asked the teacher some further questions. (Meaning the child asked the teacher more questions.)
