I’ve not really done this before, but I just wanted to share

my feelings as I’m feeling very lost and lonely at the moment:

I’ve been free from quarantine since Sunday, and I’m having real anxiety about talking to 한국사람 in real life.

I had a positive experience in the morning because I went to the 편의점 alone for the first time and the lady understood my Korean. I bought an ice cream and sat on a bench outside. I was proud.

But then in the evening, I went to Subway and the girl didn’t understand me at all. I asked for 오이 and 양파, but she gave me everything except 오이 and 양파. It was very embarrassing and I cried when I left.

Back home in the UK, I’m a very shy person so I don’t go out in public much without my friends or family. I have a soft, quiet voice and with a mask on I think it’s hard to understand me. I need more confidence but I don’t have any, it’s just not my personality. I’m a crybaby.

Right now I feel I have made a mistake coming to Korea before I was truly ready.

I still remember when I tried to communicate with international people in English properly for the first time I shook my legs bc I felt nervous so much haha😂 But now I’ve changed so much in many ways! Communication skills ofc and even attitudes! Nobody is perfect from the beginning and the steps you’ve made so far will do a huge role in improving your skills in real communications faster! No worries :)

You’re doing a good job so far Teri. If it makes you feel better, on my first trip to Seoul I was feeling the same. Around that time I also broke up with my ex and was complete alone post breakup in a country where nobody seemed to understand me. I truly can relate to your feelings. I went to a restaurant and was able to order 떡국, my heart sank every time people looked at me but the moment the food arrived I was just really proud. Still anxious but proud. Just know that those feelings are more common than you think. Use them as a reminder of how strong you’re becoming as a person. Look at you, out there conquering foreign terrain, one order at a time! So keep your head up and tell yourself “I’m excited!” every time you feel anxious and watch your anxiety slowly turn into courage the more you practice. You can do this!

@Eli Thank you so much Elif! I got the subway for the first time today and even managed to transfer between lines without getting terribly lost so I’m proud of myself today! It’s another little victory☺️
