Idiom of the Day:
“Letting the cat out of the bag”
(Have I done
this one before?) If you “let the cat out of the bag,” you are revealing a secret. For more context, you would use this saying if you revealed the secret that ruined a surprise, or if you shared a confidential secret that has now created a tense situation. This could be talking about a surprise birthday party as the birthday boy walks into the room. Or consoling an employee who is going to be fired before the boss fires them.
