Meaning: Later than expected
/intended Example (1): “My birthday is on April 25th (don’t forget) and one of my close friends sent me belated birthday wishes on April 30th. I suppose it was better late than never!”
Example (2): “The whole of the United Kingdom has been waiting for a belated agreement on Brexit but it now looks more unlikely than ever. What a complete mess.”
