To “rain on someone
’s parade” is to bring someone bad news when they are having a positive moment or feeling. The saying is followed by news that is intended to ground them back into reality. “I just got a personal high score on this game I’ve been playing!”
“I hate to rain on your parade, but the boss expects you to have that report turned in within the next fifteen minutes.”
