“Pay an arm and a leg”
By “paying an arm and
a leg,” you are saying that you had to pay a lot of money for something. Perhaps the price was very high, like for a house or a car. Perhaps you were surprised by the cost and were overcharged for something that should cost less. The origin comes from the American Civil War when soldiers were given a special pension for compensation due to losing an arm or a leg during the war.![](/moment-web/static/img/icon_moments_likes.png)
