Y’ALL
Hi, y’all! I’m new to this app and would love to to help
people learn English. Since I’ve been getting a few questions about being from Texas, I thought I’d share our favorite word with everyone: y’all! It’s a contraction of two words: you + all. In Texas (and many other southern states), almost everyone says “y’all” as a way to address two or more people instead of “you all” or “you guys.”
Ex: “Hi, how are y’all?”
Ex: “Y’all are very smart.”
If native English speakers hear someone use the word y’all, they’ll immediately know that that person is probably from somewhere in the south.
You might even see someone say “all y’all,” (“all of you all”) which is redundant, but we still use it!
Ex: “I want to teach all y’all English!”
Also, we only use the greeting “howdy” to be funny. Everyone in the south usually sticks to “hi” or “hello.”
Feel free to ask me any other questions that I could make into a post!
