Idiom of the Day:
“The whole nine yards”
This expression means
that you are fulfilling a task or duty to the fullest completion. You are not leaving any details out, and are working hard to ensure that success is the only option. The origin of this idiom comes from fighter pilots in WW2 who fired all of their bullets at a single target. The bullets were connected to chains nine yards long. Most Americans now would believe this idiom is about football or sewing. “I turned in the job application, completed a personality questionnaire, wrote a resume’ and a cover letter, and prepared answers for the job interview. I did the whole nine yards.”
