These pictures

are to show you some of the more common English Idioms (phrases that say one thing, but are not to be taken literally)

Hold your horses! = Someone is telling you to STOP! WAIT! You could be walking too fast, or rushing a job.

A piece of cake = This means something was easy. Your job might have been a piece of cake.

Blue in the face = Usually if someone is blue in the face, they are lacking oxygen, they can't breathe, or maybe they're very tired. This is said when something you are doing is more work than it is worth. You might say you tried to reason with your ex until you were blue in the face.

Head in the clouds = You daydream too much! Get your head out of the clouds! Your feet are on the ground, but your head is in the clouds.

A blessing in disguise = Something that didn't seem good at first turned out to be the best possible outcome.

Dodged a bullet = I say this often. Especially about bad dates, or a bad conversation when the other person has decided they don't like you - but you find out they were actually not a good person after all. You really dodged a bullet.

Devil's Advocate = this is when you argue in favor of an idea that you don't believe in, simply because you think that both sides need to be discussed.

These are just a few examples, many are used depending on your age or what part of the country you grew up in. Or even what country you are from - different English speaking countries have their own style of idiom.

And the English language is a living language, which means it is constantly evolving with new idioms and new slang.
