I realised a huge cultural difference between Chinese people

and people from many democratic countries today. It’s so obvious that I don’t know why I didn’t notice it before.
In Chinese culture, people deeply believe that it’s rude and unacceptable for foreigners to talk about their internal affairs (内政). And the so-called internal affairs actually covered a widely range of topics from culture to foreign policies. Yet people from many countries don’t take that as an offense.

For instance, I can say “your president is stupid” to a crazy Trump fan. He/she might argue with me, but probably I won’t be told “You’re not allowed to talk bad about my president”.
(well on the second thought Trump fans might ask me to “go back to my country”😂)

However, if you want to argue with a Chinese person by telling him/her: “I think Sun is a drug cheat.”, the most likely reply you can get is “how dare you talking sh*t about my country”, instead of “I disagree because Sun blahblahblah…”

I used to blame this typical kind of Chinese people’s reaction to lack of logic, but I was wrong. This is absolutely a kind of cultural difference. Chinese people seem to be very territorial. We prefer to set up a clear boundary between internal and external stuff. I guess that’s also why Chinese people abroad will always address local people as “foreigners”, “laowai”. Sometimes it’s not about physical boundaries anymore, but a subtle classification criterion that separate “insiders” and “outsiders”.

我一直以为中外在这种类型上的辩论鸡同鸭讲,是因为很多中国人没逻辑,原来不是,原来是因为我们的文化博大精深。

And people as they grow in a chinese system not knowing what's going on in the world as access to outside world is blocked so they don't think how bad is this kind of system.

I've seen people think what their government wants them to think, they eat, drink, wear, use whatever government wants them to eat, drink, wear or use. That's why china has less innovation because innovative minds grow up in a free and healthy environment

In some cases, like the one you mentioned, it's impossible to have a reasonable discussion about the issue. And this jingoistic attitude has led to horrible things being said, including death threats to Mack Horton, his girlfriend and his family!

@Ali well there are tons of people who grown up under Chinese system and still be able to think with a clear mind. Plus I always find it very ignorant and arbitrary to say China had lost its culture due to political or ideological movements. Those people who made this statement normally don't know much about Chinese culture like they thought. Chinese people are not Aztecs or Moors on the Iberian Peninsula.

@凯文 I'm sorry for what happened to him but I think he should have understood what will happen to him and his families before he decided to "humiliating China". International relations is a complex arena (and beyond his comprehension I guess😂).

@Guier first of all i don't know why you used that peninsula thing. Secondly i majored in chinese language n culture and I'm living here for last 3 years, travelled to different parts of China from Shanghai to counties of Jincheng and talked with hundreds of people. There are some people who think beyond but still they don't easily speak out and they are just accepting the way it is and chinese culture now is mostly limited to some important events.

@Guier While I don't necessarily agree with his decision not to stand on the dais, I'm sure he didn't do what he did in order to 'humiliate china', as you put it. And I think he was quite aware of the ramifications of his actions (after all, he has been through it before at the last Olympics). Clearly, Mack has very strong opinions regarding drug use in sport.

@凯文 hahaha the so called humiliating China stuff is just a quote from the one he humiliated😏 Yeah Horton has been regarded as our national enemy since he refused to shake hands with Sun I remembered. I'm not saying this as an excuse but national swimming team from all over the world doping to cure their "asthma""insomnia""ADD" including Australian one. The only difference is the one Sun took was put on the list since 2015. He learnt his lesson already. I think a mature athlete should leave someone else's reputation and future as a swimmer in hands of authorities.

@Ali I use Moors in Spain and Aztecs as examples to explain my definition of "buried culture". The regressive, obedient and collectivism culture you regarded is not something that has been created for only 50 years. If you really understand enough about Chinese culture, then you might realise it's actually part of our culture since thousands of years ago. Plus your resume is not a strong proof of your statement. Honestly Aussies might laugh at me if I made any similar assertive conclusion about their culture😏

@ Another Australian athlete, Raelene Boyle, won two silver medals at the Munich Olympics in 1972 in the 100m and 200m sprints. (She won gold at the 1970 and 1974 Commonwealth Games in the same events). She was beaten by an East German athlete who was later proven to be part of a widespread drug-doping program. She lost the 200m by 0.05 of a second. A clean athlete beaten by a drug cheat. Now, of course, I don't know if Sun Yang is doping - I sincerely hope he's not. It will be interesting to see what happens with the WADA appeal later in the year..

@ see you were trying to win an imaginary argument by suddenly throwing out a sweeping assumption. I think there are numerous nationalists in China. Girls don't msg you but they msg people like me a loooooot. Tbh I rarely got attacked by males here on ht. They are mainly young girls who speak broken English. It can only prove that male nationalists hate you and female nationalists hate me. And you probably hate feminists😏 And I hate disputative people with no logic.

@ easy dude. I don't have any problem with your attitude towards feminists, and I have never say there are more female nationalists than males, plus I have never denied the biological difference between two gender. The thing is, you kept changing the issue and imposing your assumption on me by stating it in an oversimplified or extreme form. References or statistics cannot cover up logical fallacies. Neither can calling me "poorly educated".

This cultural difference has gotten worse over the last 10 years. I had many conversations 10 years ago and Chinese people were definitely less "territorial" than they are now. 爱国 sentiment is definitely at an all time high
