This is the ACTH test. This test requires you to receive an injection of cosyntropin, a synthetic portion of ACTH. You will also have two blood samples drawn — one before the injection and one after the injection. These samples measure the level of cortisol in your blood.

The ACTH stimulation test may be used to investigate a low cortisol test result. It may be used to help diagnose primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison disease).
