Today I travelled
to New Zealand's largest city, Auckland. Auckland sits on top of 50 small ancient volcanoes. The biggest volcano is Rangitoto Island. Rangitoto erupted about 600 years ago and is the only volcano in the Auckland Volcanic Field thought to have erupted twice. I was very excited to find some pillow lava at the beach today. Pillow lava is formed when lava touches water and cools instantly. It creates a soft curved shape and sometimes inside there can be spaces. Over time the pillow lava breaks down and it gets filled with sand and smaller rocks. The outer structures are more closely welded together due to being cooled quickly, creating interesting striped patterns. The volcanoes of Auckland are dormant and now grassed over. When I was a child living in Auckland we used to run down into the bottom of the craters and then scramble our way back up. You got dizzy if you tried to roll down into the crater 😂 (The last two photos are not mine)
