A casual English phrase you can say when you meet someone new

.

“Put off”

Meaning, was not attractive.
Did not like.

You go on a date.
The date is going well.
But then he smokes a cigarette , and you don’t like that.
You can say:

“Everything was great, but I was put off by his smoking”

Meaning, the smoking was not attractive.
Pushed me away, not interested anymore.

“Put off” is a verb, used when something pushes you away.
Opposite of attract.

“I liked the street but was put off by the smell of durian.”
“He was put off by her dog.”

“Put off” is usually used for meeting new people or new experiences.

“The dirty streets put me off of travelling for a while.”
“She was put off by his smoking.”

I was put off by the unclean environment at the restaurant.

Did you experience something you didn’t like recently?
Were you put off by anything recently?

Thanks for reading.

Karl: What happened? You're looking sad. Jane: Nothing. Karl: You can't hide anything from me. Tell me now. Jane: Do you know my friend merry? Karl: Yes! I know her. Jane: I met her in the party yesterday and she said, your dress is not good. It's looking put off by its colour. Karl: Oh! Probably she was teasing you or jealous from your dress because you were looking gorgeous last night. Jane: Aww! Thanks Karl.

@Bud ya! “Put off” has two meanings. To delay a task and also to be repulsed by something. I’m in the same situation! I wanted to go to the garden but I’m put off by this afternoon sun, so strong! Thanks for practicing together Bud! Great pronunciation and example situation!

@MAYA “I <am> always put off by his bad comments <toward> me. Thank you for sharing your situation Maya, perfect use of the phrase and very real. The closest people in our lives are the ones that have the potential to hurt us the most, but also bring us the most joy. Hope it’s more the latter than the prior, for all of us :) and if not, then be able to change it. Wish you well Maya!

@Anurag Great example situation as always Anurag! “Put off” is usually used with a person, not an object. So instead of saying “it’s looking put off” you can say: “she was put off by my dress” Everything else in the example is perfect. I can always imagine your scenarios! Thanks for sharing Anurag!

@Jenny_P ya haha could say “put off” by his hyperactive personality. But yea, if you say “put off”, gives the impression you don’t really like him anymore. Casual way to say it might be “his energy level is just a little too much for me”
