Hello, all! 😊

I know 〜と呼ぶ means "to call someone ~" but what

I don't usually have problems with として but seeing it used with 呼ぶ is strange for me.

I read it in this passage:

"An international university opened in my town and the town (townspeople?) regarded the students as their English conversation teachers"???

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

呼ぶ has two different mean. One is you know"call". The other one is "invite" That's why you are confusing. The passage's 呼ぶ is using as "invite"

It’s a little bit wired...sorry...

Does that mean that the students were asked to give English lessons? If so, does this translation work better: "The town invited those students (to the English lessons the town provides, I suppose) as their English conversation teachers."?
