    @Anne there are more verses which offer more insight into the song, these are just the first two. Also, songs can be interpreted differently by different people. But with that in mind, I believe the song is about having a religious belief growing up but then losing that as he gets older...and maybe loses track of himself along the way...until towards the end of the song he sings about reconnecting to that lost faith he once had.
