I wanted to approach this tag with my experience as being Asian
American and talking about how I had the best of both worlds with all different types of sweets 🍭🍓🍫🍬Growing up, obviously I had American sweets and snacks, and I love them, but nothing reminds me of childhood more than Pocky does. My parents shopped at American supermarkets of course, but they preferred shopping at Asian markets as, obviously, some American markets don’t have certain items we need for our cuisine (Vietnamese cuisine). I remember being bored during these grocery shopping trips and finding myself in the big candy/snack aisles and being so overwhelmed by the whimsical and cute packaging of the Asian snacks (especially since American packaging of candy and snacks have pretty boring and dark designs compared to Asian packaging which is designed to be cute).
I would always manage to sneak a box of Pocky (basically edible sticks covered in cream) or a container of Yan Yan (more sticks and cream but the kind that you dip) into the shopping cart, and my dad would nag me for eating sweets, but he’d buy it for me anyway. Now, whenever I go to an Asian market, I can’t look at the candy aisle without feeling nostalgia wash over me.
