Grant Wood was born on February 13, 1891, on a farm near the
small town of Anamosa, Iowa.In 1930, his painting “American Gothic” created a lot of excitement when it was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago.
The hard, cold realism of this painting and the honest, direct, earthy quality of the people were unusual in American art. The artwork portrays a farmer and his daughter in front of their farmhouse in Eldon, Iowa. This painting has become one of the best-known icons of American art.
