Somebody requested that I teach a lesson on the differences between
“some” and “any”.“Some” and “any” are called quantifiers because they talk about the quantity of an item.
“Any” is used with questions and negative sentences.
Examples:
- Do you need any food?
- I don’t have any food to give you.
- Is there any more fruit left?
- There isn’t any more fruit left.
“Some” is used with questions and positive sentences.
When using “some” for questions, offers, and requests, we are assuming the answer will be positive.
Examples:
- May I have some wine? (Request)
- Would you like some flowers? (Offer)
- I have some fruit in the garden. (Positive sentence)
- She gave some wine to her friend. (Positive sentence)
