for all of you procrastinators out there. Have you ever put off a deadline for paperwork to the very last day (maybe to the very last hour)? Or you arrived at a store to buy something right before they closed? Then you have made it “in the nick of time.” Think of this idiom as the last moment before it is too late or past expiration.

“Joe turned in his taxes to the government in the nick of time. If he turned them in an hour later, he would have paid a penalty.”
