Sleep....yaaaawn.....
It’s important to get enough sleep but

it’s not always very easy.
Here are five phrases that you can use when talking about sleep (or a lack of sleep).

1. “I’m exhausted.” - I’m extremely tired.
Example: “I’ve had such a long day, I’m exhausted!”

2. “I’m beat.” - I’m tired.
Example: I’ve just worked a 12 hour shift at work. I’m beat!”

3. “Hit the hay.” - Go to bed.
Example: “I’m tired. I’m going to hit the hay.”
Origin: A long time ago, many people used to sleep on beds made of hay.

4. “Hit the sack.” - Go to bed.
Example: “I’m beat. I’m going to hit the sack.”
Origin: A long time ago, the hay that people slept on would be placed in a sack.

5. “Burning the midnight oil.” - When you are staying up late to study for a test or complete a project for work you’re “burning the midnight oil.”
Example: “Wow… I barely got that done! I was really burning the midnight oil to finish it.”
Origin: Before electricity, oil lamps were used for light.
